Snapshot

Epitiro is the global leader in measuring and publishing comparative broadband benchmarking data from the customer perspective. Telcos, ISPs, Content providers, multi-national corporations and government regulators depend on Epitiro to provide independent, thorough and timely data on the actual broadband performance levels as delivered to customers.

VoIP, video and internet performance levels are benchmarked via Epitiro’s extensive deployment of ISP-I™ edge-based agents with results available through an on-line database access service or the regularly published Internet Performance Index™ report. The company also provides bespoke test and benchmarking solutions with products such as DataLite™, VocaLite™ and ISP-I™ with its full P2P and portal analysis capabilities.

Customers including BT, Orange, Virgin, T-Mobile, New Zealand Telecom, Ofcom, Tiscali, KPN, O2, Telefonica, SKY and many others benefit from Epitiro’s real-time coverage of fixed and wireless broadband performance data currently spanning over 30 countries.

Epitiro was founded in 2000 and is based in Cardiff, Wales, UK.

Mission
Epitiro’s mission is to become the respected global voice of broadband performance through providing independent, comparative views. Epitiro is the only company to independently test and publish comparative ISP performance metrics throughout the UK, Europe, New Zealand and Australia.

Clientele
The majority of all the leading European ISPs are customers of Epitiro including BT, Orange, O2, Vodafone. The company also lists Government Regulators Ofcom and its New Zealand counterpart the Commerce Commission as clients.

Products and Services
Epitiro’s ISP-I™ platform consists of a deployment of in-country test agents that continually exercise all leading ISPs (fixed or wireless) and report measurement data to a central repository accessible only by authorised Epitiro clients. There, clients may further understand the performance of any or all the ISPs and construct bespoke reports for print out or further on-line analysis and distribution. ISP-I has recently been enhanced with P2P analysis capability.

Epitiro also offers bespoke test and monitoring solutions based on its core technologies of DataLite and VocaLite. ISPs, Media companies and regulators can deploy these software agents directly to end user computers where the agents conduct unobtrusive testing to and from a fixed point in a network. The benefit for companies deploying these agents is the scope of coverage they can achieve and the sheer amount of customer experience data that can be gained without any effort on the end user’s behalf. DataLite tests for general broadband performance along with end user CPE configuration whilst VocaLite tests VoIP performance.

Clients can obtain the data generated by ISP-I, DataLite and VocaLite via either a managed service arrangement or outright licensing of the test and monitoring solutions.

History
Epitiro Ltd was originally established as a software engineering company by founders Gavin Johns and JP Curley who first met at University.

Successfully graduating in 1993 Johns and Curley pursued separate careers in software development, coincidentally in the finance sector, yet remained in touch, toying with the notion of forming their own company.

In March 2000 they did just that, forming Purple Sun, which specialised in bespoke software engineering projects. Purple Sun completed a number of successful projects in the UK and US whilst growing its employees and capabilities. By 2002 Johns and Curley were keen to grow the business by steering away from on-demand engineering towards the stability of the product world where the right invention could lead to global growth.

The turning point came in 2002 as a result of a project for NTL’s customer Tesco, a virtual internet service provider who required an independent source to ensure it offered top-calibre service.. The solution Johns and Curley presented included true customer experience measurements based on field agents using actual lines and real web sites.

Not only did Tesco endorse the solution, Curley discovered a hole in the market in that no companies where providing an independent ISP benchmarking service. Hence in late 2002 the concept of a UK-wide all-ISP test information service was conceived.

In late 2002 Johns and Curley invested company savings from previous projects and combined it with a DTI loan to bring the ISP-I™ service to market. The product launched in 2003 with broadband providers BT and Thus being the early adopters.

Armed with real market data of the UK’s ISP performance, Epitiro launched the very successful Internet Performance Index™ (IPI), a semi-annually published league table of ISP performance. Also in 2003 Epitiro formed its relationship with the ISPA (Internet Service Provider Association) and became the referenced source for its annual awards.

In February 2005 the challenges of growth led Johns and Curley to bring business expertise on-board in the form of David Pilgrim, Chairman, a seasoned veteran of business management with extensive UK and US experience.

Since 2005 the company has gone from strength-to-strength by both expanding its scope of coverage and launching products and services.

Most of the UK’s leading ISPs are now customers while countries such as Qatar, Italy, Germany, Ireland and Holland have requested local broadband insight from Epitiro. In 2006 Epitiro established an office in Auckland with Telecom New Zealand soon becoming a customer.
